A Rochester staple for 40 years, the California Brew Haus at 402 West Ridge Road has seen a lot of changes in its day – and evolving with the times is exactly why the legendary neighborhood bar has stayed in business.
Owner Dick Scorse opened the California Brew Haus in 1969, when he was a 22-year-old Vietnam veteran. It has taken a great deal of management skill and a true love of the business and his patrons to keep the club open for four decades. It’s also required Dick to stay current with the times, and make changes as needed.
One of Rochester's premier venues, Water St. Music Hall impressively takes over a corner of our city that has become known as music central. Evolving over the years with different names, different looks and different owners, one thing has remained a constant... it's commitment to live music. From the Country Warehouse (1978-1991) to the Horizontal Boogie Bar (1991-1994) to its current incarnation as Water St. Music Hall, hundreds of bands have stopped through.
People could certainly use a laugh right about now, so it’s a good thing comedy is back in Rochester. With the surprise shuttering of The Comix Cafe a few months back, after almost a dozen years in existence, there was a real concern that our once thriving comedy scene would go by the wayside. But part of the team that helped The Comix Cafe succeed for all those years is back in the business of getting your funny bone tickled at their new enterprise, The Comedy Club.
Abilene is a city in Texas, a Dave Alvin song, and the name of Danny Deutsch’s new bar on Liberty Pole Way. After months of renovating the old Tara’s Cocktail Lounge into his own baby, christened Abilene, Deutsch finally opens his doors to the public. The transformation is amazing, going from a worn looking tavern (Tara’s had been there for almost 3 decades) into a fresh and inviting new hangout. Deutsch always saw the huge potential with “the layout, the patio and the location” and now it seems that his vision has come to fruition.
