"If Music Be The Food..." A Chamber Music Concert Benefiting Foodlink @ St. Paul's Church, February 1

•HARMONY FOR HAITI – A benefit concert, “Harmony for Haiti,” will be performed in Kilbourn Hall, 26 Gibbs Street, on Thursday, January 28. The event is organized by Eastman students Jordon Hayes and Emeric Vani. They have invited Eastman alumnus, tenor Louima Lilite, who was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, to perform and to speak at the event. Lilite was in Haiti, where he serves as coordinator of the North Haiti Music Camp, when the country was hit by the catastrophic earthquake. Also performing are the Gamelan Lila Muni ensemble, other Eastman School ensembles and orchestras, and the U of R’s a cappella group, the Yellowjackets. Call (585) 274-1100.

•SOCIETY FOR CHAMBER MUSIC IN ROCHESTER – The Memorial Art Gallery celebrates the opening of their new exhibit, Fashioning Kimono: Japanese Art and Music, with a concert by the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester on January 31 at the MAG, 500 University Avenue. Works by Akira Yuyama, Toru Takemitsu and Maurice Ravel will be featured. A pre-concert talk at 7 p.m. precedes the 7:30 p.m. performance. Call (585) 377-6770.

•ROCHESTER PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA – On January 28 & 30, Christopher Seaman conducts a program featuring Charles Ross on timpani in Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs Street. The program will feature the world premiere of Jeff Tyzik’s Timpani Concerto, plus works by Debussy and Brahms…and on January 29, Mr. Seaman again leads the RPO in a program of music by Brahms, Mendlessohn and Dvorak in the Performance Hall at Hochstein, 50 N. •PEGASUS EARLY MUSIC – On January 29, Pegaus Early Music offers a concert entitled “Music and Medicine” at the Rochester Academy of Medicine, 1441 East Avenue. The performance celebrates Rochester’s medical community, exploring the programmatic intersections of music and medicine through works which include Marais’ “Gall Bladder Operation,” Purcell’s “Mad Bess” and others. A pre-concert talk starts 45 minutes before the 8 p.m. concert. Call (585) 703-3990.

•BISHOP KEARNEY MULTI-CULTURAL CLUB – Black History Month will be celebrated on January 30 by the Bishop Kearney Multicultural Club at their annual “Oh Freedom” concert. The group has reached out to the Maplewood community for this family event which features performances by the Elim Gospel Choir, the Greater Rochester Music & Arts Choirs, Spiritus Christ Gospel Choir, sacred dance, and spoken word performances. Titled “Be Blessed,” the concert will be offered at 7 p.m. at St. Luke Tabernacle Church, 1261 Dewey Avenue. Call (585) 342-4000.

•FOODLINK BENEFIT CONCERT – On February 1, the Eastman School of Music and some out of town guests will join together for a program of chamber music to benefit Fodlink, Rochester’s non-profit regional food bank. The program will be presented at St. Paul’s Church, 25 Westminster Road and includes music by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Johannes Brahms. Performing will be Katherine Ciesinski and her students, Dr. Robert Poovey, Marcantonio Barone, Wendy Sharp, Carol Rodland and Scott Kluksdahl. Call (585) 274-1417.

•LED ZEPPELIN/DAVE MATTHEWS LASER – The Saturday Night Laser Shows at the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium, 657 East Avenue, continue in February with two shows. “Led Zeppelin Laser” will be offered each Saturday at 9:30 p.m. featuring such songs as “In the Evening,” “Ramble On,” “All My Love,” and “Stairway to Heaven;” and at 10:30 p.m., “Dave Matthews Laser” will feature favorite DMB tunes like “Ants Marching,” “Satellite,” “Crush” and “Everyday.” Each show is accompanied by argon and krypton lasers that fill the planetarium dome with dazzling color patterns dancing to the classic rock sounds.
