It was 1996 when veteran Rochester musicians James Richmond (sax, keyboard and vocals) and Ralph Ortiz (bass) started assembling their dream band, Prime Time Funk. Now, 13 years later, PTF has survived more than the test of time. After the sudden passing of Ralph Ortiz on February 2, the band has been forced to reflect on its own future.

The decision is unanimous. Vocalist Ronnie Leigh, drummer Dave Cohen, saxophonist Vince Ercolamento, keyboard player Andy Calabrese, guitarist Joe Chiappone, trumpet players Ron D’Angelo and Derrick Lipp, and baritone sax player Mike Edwards join Jim Richmond in announcing the newest addition to PTF: Syracuse bassist Ron France.

PTF will host “Remember Ralph,” a benefit concert featuring many of Rochester’s best musicians, on Sunday, April 26 from 1 to 10 p.m. at Water Street Music Hall. The band will also continue recording its follow-up to 2001’s Ready and Willing, dedicated to Ralph. www.primetimefunk.com
