Rochester Biennial
Each summer, the Memorial Art Gallery at 500 University Avenue presents a showcase of regional art. This year, it’s the return of the Rochester Biennial, an invitational, which will be on display from June 10 thru August 5 in the Grand Gallery. The show will feature works by Roberto Bertoia of Ithaca (sculpture), Yvonne Buchanan of Syracuse (video), Val Cushing of Alfred (ceramics), Eunsuh Choi of Rochester (glass) and David Higgins of Corning (painting) as well as the team of Larson & Shindelman – Nate Larson of Baltimore & Marni Shindelman of Rochester – (photography). Call (585) 276-8939.
KEVA Planks Experience
The Rochester Museum & Science Center at 657 East Avenue invites visitors this summer to construct wooden masterpieces of all shapes and sizes at an exhibition called KEVA Planks, A Building Experience. The show will be featured at the RMSC from June 2 through September 3. Precision cut, identical construction blocks, KEVA Planks use only gravity to achieve their balance and strength, encouraging the user to dabble with physics in order to create. Call (585) 697-1944.
Design Zone
Visitors to the Strong National Museum of Play, One Manhattan Square, can discover how video game developers, music producers, roller coaster designers and other creative problem solvers use math and science to do amazing things at a new interactive exhibit, Design Zone, opening on June 2. Among the centers to be explored at this show are Theme Park, Action Sports Arena, Skate Park, Bike Race, Recording Studio, Dance Party, Video Game Design Lab, Architecture Studio and Digital Design. During opening weekend, on June 2 & 3, Tim Fort – the Kinetic King from America’s Got Talent – will be on hand with exploding, chain-reacting Popsicle-stick art. Call (585) 263-2700.
