Lights Up – Dance

Bill Evans Dance Company @ Hochstein Performance Hall, March 18

Biodance/Oratorio Society

Two world-premiere performances of choreography by local artists will be part of a March 9 concert by the Rochester Oratorio Society.  Presented at Hochstein Performance Hall, 50 N. Plymouth Avenue, the program features a light-hearted mix of modern dance, choral masterworks and instrumental chamber music.  The program features Biodance under the direction of Missy Pfohl Smith; the Antara Winds, featuring faculty from the Eastman School, SUNY Geneseo and Hochstein; and a trio of strings and piano led by Kevin Nitsch.

Biodance will perform original choreography by Missy Pfohl Smith set to “Lovesong Waltzes” by Johannes Brahms; and after intermission, they present the second world premiere of the evening with “Scherzo” choreographed by Bill Evans and set to music of Brahms.  Call (585) 473-2234.

 

SOTA Dance Concert

The School of the Arts at 45 Prince Street will present Dance Concert 2012 on March 9, 10 & 11.  This annual production by the SOTA Dance Department faculty features a variety of dance forms – modern jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop, swing and musical theatre – with faculty and dance majors performing together.  This year’s guest artists are Anne Harris-Wilcox from Present Tense Dance and Steve Humphrey of Garth Fagan Dance.  Call (585) 242-7682.

 

Dancing in the Vernal Equinox

Dancing in the Vernal Equinox:  An Afternoon of Choreography by Bill Evans will be presented on March 18 at Hochstein Performance Hall, 50 N. Plymouth Avenue.  Six works will be premiered at the event, three of them featuring live music by the Eastman School’s Ossia New Music Ensemble – “Naturescape Unfolding” – an abstract art piece with music composed by Matt Evans; “Under the Bridge – humorous performance art created by Bill Evans for Cocoon Theatre with music by Matt Evans; and “Round Seven” – an athletic work for seven dancers in 7/4 time.  Visit www.billevansdance.org.
