New Year’s Eve Events

It’s finally here – the biggest (and last) holiday of 2013. New Year’s provides a variety of fun for all ages in our region.  
Family parties, special nights at the theatre, comedy shows, festivities in local pubs & clubs, fireworks and more are planned here in our community as we gather together to Welcome 2014!

Downtown Rochester’s New Year’s Eve Celebration includes free ice skating at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park Ice Rink (formerly known as the Manhattan Square Park Ice Rink) with music by Beal’s Rock & Roll Review.  There will be a family skate from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by an adult-only skate from 9 to 11.  There will also be a free celebration downtown at the Riverside Convention Center, 123 E. Main Street, from 7 to 10 p.m., complete with a DJ Dance Party featuring Jimmy C’s Music Machine, bounce houses, an obstacle course, airbrush tattoos, photo booths, caricature artists, magicians, clowns and more.  The annual Fireworks show is then scheduled for 10 p.m. at the Main Street Bridge.  Visit www.cityofrocheste.gov/NYE; or call 311 in the city/585-429-5990 outside of Rochester for further details.  Editor’s Note – You can park for free from 6 to 11 p.m. at the South Ave., Washington Square, Court St. and Sister Cities Garages…and RGRTA will offer free bus rides on all regular routes from 6:20 p.m. on 12/31/13 to 1 a.m. on 01/01/14 – schedules are available at www.rgrta.com.

The Capitol Steps make their annual New Year’s Eve stop at the Nazareth College Arts Center, 4245 East Avenue.  For nearly two decades, Rochesterians have enjoyed this performance as a way to send out the old, and ring in the new.  Call (585) 389-2170 to reserve your tickets; and see our Coming to Town section for details.

•You can celebrate New Year’s with a special Dinner and Double Feature at the George Eastman House, 900 East Avenue.  Dinner will be served in the Eastman’s Café before a double feature of Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins 2:  The New Batch (1990).  Films start at 7 p.m.; and reservations are required.  Dial (585) 271-3361.

•An RMSC Members Only Family New Year’s Eve Party is planned at the Rochester Museum & Science Center, 657 East Avenue.  Running from 7 to 10 p.m., there will be crafts, hot chocolate and cookies, and a New Year’s Eve countdown at 9 p.m.  Call (585) 697-1942 to register if you are a member; and if you have a friend who is a museum member, they can call and sign you up, too!

•How ’bout an action-packed sporting event to kick off your New Year’s Eve? Our Rochester RazorSharks, members of the Premiere Basketball League, will tip-of their 2014 season at the Blue Cross Arena, One War Memorial Square, at 7:05 p.m. Call (585) 232-9190.

•At the Southeast Family YMCA, 111 E. Jefferson Road in Pittsford, their annual New Year’s Eve Family Bash will offer pizza, crafts, games, roller skating, a bounce house, piñatas and more.  Visit www.rochesterymca.org.

•The Town of Henrietta Family New Year’s Eve Party at the former Fair & Expo Center, 2695 East Henrietta Road, will offer activities for all ages from 6 to 10 p.m.  The event features magic shows, a DJ dance party, karaoke, a reptile exhibit, carnival games, face tattoos, inflatables, crafts, roller skating and more.  Call (585) 359-2540.

•There will be hors d’oeuvres, a dinner, a live band, midnight champagne, hats, noise-makers and more at the Italian Style New Year’s Eve Party taking place at the Italian American Community Center, 150 Frank DiMino Way.  Call (585) 594-8882.

Geva Comedy Improv’s New Year’s Eve Comedy Spectacular! will be presented in the Nextstage at Geva Theatre Center, 75 Woodbury Blvd., at 7:30 & 10:30 p.m. featuring live music, live actors, hilarious comedy, and champagne. A dance party is even planned after the late show!…Other theatre events are scheduled as well.  Shake-Co Radio Theatre will offer a dramatic production of Flatland:  A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin A Abbott at 7 p.m. at MuCCC, 142 Atlantic Ave. (www.muccc.org)…Downstairs Cabaret is performing Take Me Home – a fun-filled trip down memory lane with hits from the 70’s and 80’s – at the company’s 20 Windsor Street theatre (complete with a cash bar) at 6:30 & 10:15 p.m.  The later show also features desserts, a champagne toast, party favors and more; and at their 540 E. Last Night Perry 2013, the area’s safe, fun, alcohol-free, family-oriented New Year’s Eve celebration will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight at the Perry Elementary Middle School, 50 Olin Avenue in Perry NY.  Some 40 performers will be seen on the Last Night stage, and there will be face painting, wandering musicians, clowns, crafts, a bounce hut, magicians, puppets, juggling, comedians, a drum circle, karaoke, and much more.  Perry High School simultaneously offers a Sports Night of swimming, golf, and more.  Call (585) 237-5375 for full details.
